  1. Usually by extracting the layers and looking through them. There's dive ( https://github.com/wagoodman/dive ) for making that easier.

  3. You're bang on, but you can do things with dive ( https://github.com/wagoodman/dive ) and use chunks of the code in other projects... That's what I've been doing. The license is MIT so it's permissive. But yes, an API would be ideal. I've…
  4. …to avoid those redundant downloads? A side-by-side comparison of dive's output would be helpful ( https://github.com/wagoodman/dive ). Also can you clarify what you mean by "requiring full rebuilds of all previous steps"?

  16. Not necessarily. It is certainly easier to read a dockerfile, but there are tools like https://github.com/wagoodman/dive (im sure there are others) that allow you to inspect images themselves in a very detailed manner.
  17. I very much enjoy dive[1] for this purpose, though it doesn't seem to be maintained anymore... [1] https://github.com/wagoodman/dive
  18. Thanks for sharing, very useful blog post (not just the linked section). Reference to https://github.com/wagoodman/dive will help a lot today.

  28. This app is great for discovering waste https://github.com/wagoodman/dive I've found 100MB fonts and other waste. All the tips are good, but until you actually inspect your images, you won't know why they are so bloated.
