There's a huge push for this from the big companies adopting Rust. Google has been developing https://github.com/google/crubit . The older cbdingen is still usable if more limited (it's what Firefox uses for some pretty involved interop).

In the long run https://github.com/google/crubit will very likely solve this for Rust even if it's a bit specific to Google's use cases right now as per readme.

What I'm really hoping is that https://github.com/google/crubit eventually gets good enough to facilitate incremental migration of brownfield C++ codebases to Rust. That seems like it would address this concern.

…Rust can interop with C++ with high fidelity. For example https://docs.rs/moveit/latest/moveit/ and https://github.com/google/crubit/blob/main/rs_bindings_from_... provide functionality to use non-trivially relocatable C++ types from Rust.
