Give hstr a try: https://github.com/dvorka/hstr It's saved me countless hours over the years as it's just so much better than regular CTRL-R. I also find it to work better than fzf.

Not built-in but hstr ( https://github.com/dvorka/hstr ) and tldr ( https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr ) are awesome.

I bound hstr to CTRL-R ( https://github.com/dvorka/hstr ) and then just search the history for the keywords I need. Only rarely is a command not already stored in the history.

You should try hstr ( https://github.com/dvorka/hstr ). It replaces CTRL-R with a full page interactive history search that really works. Demo GIF here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/375914

I've found this tool to be super-helpful: https://github.com/dvorka/hstr It's like ctrl-r, but it shows you many candidates at once.
