  2. That is the source of DocumentFormat.OpenXml, you're talking about the same package, https://github.com/dotnet/Open-XML-SDK#packages Microsoft are incapable of: 1. naming things well 2. keeping those names stable

  6. There is no need to have Excel installed to use the OpenXML libraries. https://github.com/OfficeDev/Open-Xml-Sdk They also support being used on .NET Core.

  8. Microsoft has released an SDK for reading and writing Office files, under the Apache 2 license: https://github.com/OfficeDev/Open-Xml-Sdk It's in C#, but it builds on Mono, and it's probably still easier than hacking LO to act as a library.
