Tailscale doesn't, but there's another opensource project which does provide control plane: https://github.com/juanfont/headscale . Even with a on-prem control plane, you probably want logging setup to detect when unusual nodes get pushed…

Would something like headscale ( https://github.com/juanfont/headscale ) solve that concern?

…clients, but the server is not open source and, sure enough, someone wrote an open source server: https://github.com/juanfont/headscale

Their documentation is excellent too. Also worth mentioning the open-source derivative: https://github.com/juanfont/headscale

Tailscale works perfectly for this. There's a third party open source server, too: https://github.com/juanfont/headscale (I just use the free hosted backend, obviously you trust them to do the key exchange)

…on a self hosted project similar to tailscale: https://github.com/gravitl/netmaker . There is also https://github.com/juanfont/headscale which is an open sourced implementation of the Tailscale coordination server. Tailscale "just works"…

Self-hosting is possible by adding headscale too: https://github.com/juanfont/headscale It doesn't have all the features of tailscale hosted server, but they seem to be actively working the list of missing features.

…relay fallbacks for when UDP is blocked or NAT traversal fails. Or you can self-host Tailscale with https://github.com/juanfont/headscale if you want.

…public keys into anyone’s network. I don’t know if the situation is any different in ZeroTier. https://github.com/juanfont/headscale is a (not yet complete) free software control server for Tailscale if you want to self-host.

https://github.com/juanfont/headscale replaces the tailscale control panel with something open source and self-hosted. However, it doesn't have all the features of the official tailscale control panel.

Anyone have a comparison to headscale (self-host/oss tailscale)? https://github.com/juanfont/headscale I suppose the turn server support for nat hole punching is the biggest difference?
